What happens when you are not satisfied with dinner?

It is 9:30 pm...I've had dinner, I've had a snack, and there was also a bowl of tuna with defrosted corn...but I'm still hungry and want to eat something satisfactory...alas, there is pretty much nothing in my house.

I think that's what happens when I'm not happy with dinner. Today after work I made pasta with roasted red peppers, corn, goat cheese and spinach. It wasn't horrible, but it definitely did not hit the spot. So then I had some tuna....and then an apple with some peanut butter...and still I want something else.

I'd love a spoon of Nutella or a cookie with a glass of milk or a really awesome sandwich. And all that separates me from any of these things is a walk to the grocery store (10 min). But it is really cold and dark outside, and so I'm staying in and stopping looking at Tastespotting and Foodgawker, because that's just painful :(

The question for you then is What do you do when whatever food craving you have is unsatisfied? Do you just go as far as necessary to buy that one doughnut or hotdog? Or do you just find something else to do to stop thinking about food?

I decided to paint my nails and toenails...that way I really can't eat for a while (don't want to smudge my nails).

Thanks for the nail-painting idea! That should stop me from eating for an hour. ^_^
The trouble is there's always something to rummage for - to eat in my house. Either it's fruit yoghurt, ice-cream, self-baked cookies or cake and chocolates, or I'll whip up a bit of vanilla custard in a little pot within minutes.
That's why I joined a gym - to work off some calories!

Hi!
I came across your blog from foodgawker (that jumble of words caught my eye). I have to say though, painting your nails is a brilliant idea :) ill try to remember that the next time I'm craving for food...

I make tea, usu. green or oolong. If I'm jonesing for something sweet, chai. That usually kills it. I can nurse a cup of tea for a reeeeeally long time.

I've been pondering this one throughout the day - this sounds terribly organised but the cravings only happen if I'm on my own - otherwise I'm usually well stocked for dinner. When they do I will drive for hours to get my desire!!

Candy cane tea! It tastes like you're eating something indulgent but it's just tea! :)

That is a great idea to paint the nails - What I do is keep the dove or ghirdelli bite size choc in the house and grab just one and believe it or not it does do the trick. The other winner is a bowl of berries with cool whip - low in everything and high in flavor!

Great Idea! I usually end up doing what you did. Snack mindlessly in order to satisfy that unending hunger and then regretting it later. It is really about trying to discract yourself with something other than food.

This is so true! Cravings seem to hit me after BIG meals, like roast and mashed potatoes. I've heard (from Sally Fallon, http://westonaprice.org) that fat content has to be high enough to satisfy those cravings. I'm curious to see if that helps others.

Thanks,
~Anne

usually i grumble about it and then eat whatever's available and feel depressed.

I agree with the fat content-if I eat an apple for a snack, it just doesn't do it for me. I always want something else. that's where the peanut butter comes in. are you a fan?
